Three Signs Your Wheels Need Realignment

A common problem that could become costly

Despite the name, wheel misalignment isn’t just about wheels. It’s more about your suspension system and whether it’s steering your wheels evenly. One of the most common causes of problems, though, is uneven tire wear. Other times, it’s from overloading your trunk or riding over rough roads, both of which should always be avoided.

Whatever the cause, wheel misalignment can become costly. Not only does it reduce fuel efficiency, but it also leads to more frequent tire replacements and even accidents.

It’s best to have your alignment checked every time you have your oil changed, every 3,000-5,000 miles.

To help reduce your cost and keep you safe, here are four symptoms of wheel misalignment.

  1. The car is pulling sharply to one side

Has your car ever pulled sharply and suddenly? While it may be from underinflated tires, it could also be from wheel misalignment. If your tires are full and your car still pulls, it’s probably the latter, and you need visit a car repair professional ASAP. We at HEART Certified Auto Care would love to help. We have three convenient Chicago area locations: HEART Northbrook, HEART Evanston, and HEART Wilmette, and 98% of our car repair service is completed the same day.

  2. The car is pulling slightly

Less jarring than the sharp pull is a slight pull, though it is still serious. If you suspect your car’s been pulling, we suggest driving to an open parking lot and, while driving in a straight line, let go of the wheel. Your car should continue on that line. If it pulls left or right, that’s a sign your suspension’s misaligned. Give HEART Certified Auto Care a call, and we’ll have you back on track straight away.

  3. The steering wheel is vibrating

Vibrating steering wheels mean your wheels are imbalanced, which can do some serious damage to your alignment overall. If your steering wheel is vibrating, we suggest taking a look at your tires. It’s possible one side is worn. If they look good, though, there could be a problem with your wheel alignment, and it’s time to call a car repair professional. Either way, HEART recommends doing an alignment check once a year. It will save you time and money down the road.

  4. The steering wheel is crooked

This is a tricky one, because you may not realize when the steering wheel is crooked. The next time you’re driving, check to see if you’re subconsciously moving the steering wheel left or right to maintain a straight line. If you are, that definitely means your wheels need realignment. Call or stop by one of HEART Certified Auto Care’s three Chicago area locations. We’re always happy to help.

If you have any further questions on wheel alignment or any other car repair or car parts, please call or visit HEART Northbrook, HEART Evanston, or HEART Wilmette today.
