What to Do If You Fail Your Emissions Test

What is an emissions test?

In order to be registered in the state of Illinois, your vehicle must pass an emissions test. This test is required to ensure all vehicles meet federal and state emissions standards. Vehicles must undergo emissions tests every two years at a state testing facility.

Identifying emissions problems

Driving with faulty emissions can cause significant damage to a vehicle, as well as adding more pollution to the air. Left unresolved, emissions issues can spiral into even more expensive repairs. A common indication of emissions trouble is your vehicle’s check engine light coming on. Do not delay repairs in the event of emissions problems.

If you think there’s a problem with your emissions, bring your vehicle to one of HEART Certified Auto Care’s three convenient locations in Evanston, Wilmette, or Northbrook. Our qualified technicians can measure your emissions levels and determine if there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Failing an emissions test

If your vehicle fails a state emissions test, it must be inspected again. You will receive a vehicle inspection report and certificate, repair shop card, and required vehicle repair data. A mechanic can then determine the exact problem and suggest repairs to help your vehicle pass the emissions test.

Maybe you have a compromised or missing catalytic converter, or your pollutant levels are too high in your vehicle’s exhaust, such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, or other pollutants. Whatever the cause, HEART Certified Auto Care will ascertain the problem and offer solutions to correct any problems that are causing your car to fail the emissions test. We will explain in detail what repairs you need to pass the emissions test and perform any necessary maintenance.

Because of the technical expertise required to make emissions repairs, we recommend you don’t try these at home. Trained professionals, like the ones you’ll find at HEART, are better equipped to properly diagnose problems and make needed car repairs.

Maintaining your vehicle

Passing an emissions test is just the first step. A big part of keeping both your vehicle and the environment clean is basic vehicle maintenance. Let HEART Certified Auto Care inspect your exhaust system when we change your oil or rotate your tires.
